Volker Hirsch

Volker Hirsch – Keynote Speaker

Volker is an entrepreneur, advisor and angel investor who has founded and co-founded a total of 7 companies to date. He is the co-founder of Blue Beck, a Venture Partner at Emerge Education, Europe’s leading EdTech accelerator, and the Chairman of Bibblio, which is building next-gen recommender systems for knowledge content. He invests in education technology, AI, IoT and big data with a portfolio of investments with companies based in London, Manchester, Seattle, Atlanta and Hamburg.

Volker has been at the forefront of industries that were once described “niche” since 2000. He helped launch the world’s first mobile music services and published games on mobile phones, including Call of Duty 3, X-Men 3 and the first titles for a small studio called Rovio, later of the Angry Birds phenomenon.

With over 15 year’s experience of conference speaking, with an impressive combined audience totalling in excess of 100,000, Volker is a seasoned presenter. His credentials include speaking at large conferences including TEDx and SXSW, as well as addressing the Norwegian Minister of Education’s Leadership Summit for the Future of Higher Education.

Q & A Panel Session: Edtech as a driving force of global education

On Wednesday, 11th April, Blackboard will host “Edtech as a driving force of global education”, a panel discussion that will aim to shed some light on the current and future role of technology in promoting better education for everyone.

Anne McElvoy, Senior Editor at the Economist

Anne McElvoy is Senior Editor of the Economist and was its global Policy Editor from 2010-16. She writes on political and international affairs and runs Economist Radio, the company’s audio arm. Anne has also written weekly politics column for the Evening Standard for 15 years and was previously Executive Editor for a decade.

A presenter of Start the Week on BBC Radio4, the Moral Maze and Free Thinking for the BBC, she is an experienced live broadcaster and series maker of political history series, on Conservatism, Liberalism and Socialism for BBC Radio4.

She has a First-Class Honours Degree in German and Philosophy from Wadham College, Oxford and studied at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Her two books on modern Germany, include an international best-seller, Memoirs of a Spymaster, Markus Wolf.

As the Times’ correspondent in East Berlin, she reported the fall of the Berlin Wall. Subsequently she covered the Yugoslavia and Chechnya wars and was the paper’s bureau chief in Moscow during the rise of Vladimir Putin.  Anne received the Journalist of the Year/Women in Public Life award in 2015. She is an education board member of the World Economic Forum at Davos and the education and digital planning board of the Royal Opera House in London.

Her main foreign languages are German, Russian and French.

Berit Kjeldstad

Berit Kjeldstad, Head of Education Quality Division, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway

Berit Kjeldstad is a Professor in Environmental Physics and former Pro-rector of Education at Norwegian University of Science and Technology 2009 – 2017. In 2006 – 2009, Kjeldstad was the Head of the Department of Physics.

Berit is focused on developing activities related to their areas of responsibility

  • Ensuring strong management with emphasis on quality in education
  • Providing suitable technical and administrative services under their areas of responsibility
  • Representing and positioning the institution and promoting internal and external collaboration
  • Creating a positive organizational culture and fostering a productive working environment for enhanced focus on teaching and learning

She was leading the Norwegian committee producing the report MOOCs for Norway – New digital learning methods in higher education – 2014.

She took part in the group preparing the ICT strategy for Higher Education Institutions in Norway.

Koscielniak lightboard[2]

Dr. Thierry Koscielniak, Vice Chief Digital Officer, Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (Le Cnam), Paris, France

Thierry Koscielniak is Vice Chief Digital Officer at le Cnam in Paris, France. As a member of the National Digital Office he plays a role in strategic planning and policy development for information system and digital services. He is in charge of an E-portfolio project for lifelong learning. His present field of pedagogical research is using virtual reality for immersive learning.

He is officer of the board of CSIESR as International Affairs Secretary. CSIESR is the French association of IT professionals in higher education.

He is also officer of the board of EUNIS as Vice Secretary and EDUCAUSE Liaison Officer. EUNIS is a European association of professionals in higher education in charge of IT and teaching & learning digital services.

He is coordinator of the organizing committee of EUNIS 2018 annual conference in Paris, 5-8 June. Thierry completed a PhD in Computational Chemistry.

Prof. Neil Morris, Chair of Educational Technology, Innovation and Change in the School of Education and Director of Digital Learning, University of Leeds, UK

Professor Neil Morris is Chair of Educational Technology, Innovation and Change in the School of Education and Director of Digital Learning at the University of Leeds, leading on a number of strategic technology projects. He is a National Teaching Fellow, winning a number of national awards for teaching excellence. His research background is in neuroscience and current research interests include educational technology, online and blended learning. He has conducted a number of published studies on the impact of mobile technologies on student learning and engagement and is the co-author of Study Skills Connected, a successful textbook on using technology to enhance learning (Palgrave MacMillan).

Reece, Richard

Prof. Richard Reece, Associate Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Students, The University of Manchester, UK

Richard Reece is the Professor of Molecular Biology at The University of Manchester, and is also the Associate Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Students. He has a particular interest in promoting online/blended education – to students on campus and at a distance – and associated activities both across the institution and more widely.

He studied Biochemistry at The University of Leeds and did his PhD work at the University of Leicester and then spent five years undertaking post-doctoral work at Harvard University, before returning to the UK as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and then Professor at The University of Manchester. His research interests focus on the molecular mechanisms by which cells are able to alter their patterns of gene expression in response to metabolic changes in the environment, and involves a mixture of molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics and structural biology. Richard is deeply committed to raising the standards of teaching quality across higher education. To enable this, he is involved with, and leads, a number of national and international fora.
